RC 10 Vijftiende-eeuwsch bruyloftslied (“Heer Jezus in der bruyloft quam”)

Like Blij stond de zon (Joyfully Stood the Sun, RC 9), Diepenbrock composed the Vijftiende-eeuwsch bruyloftslied (Fifteenth-Century Wedding Song) for the wedding of his college friend Jan Sterck. Both works were performed on 12 August 1884.

Originally the Bruyloftslied was purely strophic, but over the years Diepenbrock frequently revised the composition. (BD V:330) He considered it a fully-fledged piece and in 1902 he wanted it to be published together with nine other a cappella choral works. (BD IV:35) His wish came true in September 1906, when S.L. van Looy in Amsterdam published the Vier Vierstemmige Liederen voor Sopraan, Alt, Tenoor & Bas (Four Four-Part Songs for Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass). Besides the Bruyloftslied, the edition included Den uil (The Owl, RC 58), the Oud paaschlied uit Twente “Christus is opgestanden” (Ancient Easter Song from Twente “Christ has Risen”, RC 57) and the Rey van burchtsaeten (Choral Song of the Burghers, RC 28).

The official premiere of the Vijftiende-eeuwsch bruyloftslied by the Amsterdamsch Vocal Quartet took place in the Walloon Church in Delft on 5 September 1897, together with the first performance of Dämmerung (Twilight, RC 7). Both pieces were included in the programme of an extensive concert tour.

On 2 February 1900 Diepenbrock conducted a performance of the Vijftiende-eeuwsch bruyloftslied by a quartet consisting of the soloists Aaltje Noordewier-Reddingius (soprano), Cato Loman (alto), Jos Tijssen (tenor) and Gerard Zalsman (bass) at a concert of the Haarlemsch A Cappella Choir conducted by E.F. Bruynsteen in the Remonstrant Church in Haarlem. The programme also included Diepenbrock’s Stabat mater dolorosa for mixed choir (RC 34) and the Rey van burchtsaeten. In a review composer and conductor Philip Loots called the Bruyloftslied a humorous and crystal clear composition which under Diepenbrock was executed in all its fresh sincerity, in all its joyful power and heartfelt tenderness, but also in all its skilful, rich polyphonic arrangement. The Vijftiende-eeuwsch bruyloftlied was sung on Diepenbrock’s fiftieth birthday (2 September 1912) at the opening of the festive dinner held at the house of Sara de Swart and Emilie van Kerkhoff in the village of Laren. This tribute by Aaltje Noordewier-Reddingius, Pauline de Haan-Manifarges, Jacq. van Kempen and Gerard Zalsman came as a surprise; Diepenbrock was visibly moved. (BD VIII:3-4)
